Brazil: Workers Set Barricades Ablaze, Protest against Government Negligence

By Nélida Tello

The demand for vaccines, emergency aid, and reduced cost of gas intensified on Tuesday as workers in São Paulo set barricades on fire restricting travel on two major roads.

The protest was a response to the federal and state government negligent response to COVID.

Cities across the state of São Paulo are not prepared to treat an influx of ICU patients, as more than 90% of ICU beds are currently occupied and hospitals have limited supplies and medication to treat COVID patients.

The city of São Paulo set a new death record, surpassing 1,000 within 24 hours, on the day of the protest.

Demonstrators defended the current lockdown and raised the demand for labor rights for app drivers. Chants against Bolsonaro and the reactionary governor of São Paulo, João Doria, were chanted by demonstrators during the protest.
