Week in Struggle: August 27-September 2


Graffiti signed by revolutionary youth organization Red Unity – Revolutionary Youth League (Unidade Vermelha – Liga da Juventude Revolucionária) in support of the League of Poor Peasants (LCP, Liga dos Camponeses Pobres) was documented in Porto Alegre. The LCP lead the poor peasantry in their struggle for land as part of the agrarian revolution. The graffiti reads “Death to the latifundio [large landlords]! Long live the League of Poor Peasants!”


Activists with Partisan Youth Initiative/Marxist-Leninist-Maoist, a revolutionary organization of Turkish immigrants, held actions calling for the release of Chairman Gonzalo, leader of the Communist Party of Peru and greatest living Communist in the world. The actions included banners, graffiti, and posters in Germany, France, Switzerland, and Austria, with the slogan “Defend the life of Chairman Gonzalo!”


Activists in Magdeburg held a demonstration honoring four Turkish martyrs who died on death fasts. The martyrs included Helin Bölek and Ibrhaim Gökcek, both members of the revolutionary Turkish band Grup Yorum, as well as political prisoners Mustafa Kocak and Ebru Timtik. A banner was also documented at the demonstration raising the call to defend the life of Chairman Gonzalo.

Revolutionaries took part in a massive protest in Düsseldorf against the new Assembly Act, which allows police and intelligence agencies greater powers to ban protests and surveil activists. While the protest had over 4,000 attendees, a block of several hundred anti-imperialists marched with red flags and a banner reading, “Defend the rights of struggle! Stop the Assembly Act!” along with another banner with the call to defend the life of Chairman Gonzalo.

In Berlin, Baden-Württemberg, and Hamburg, graffiti and posters in support of the election boycott campaign were documented with the slogans “Do not vote for exploitation, that never works! Boycott the elections of the bourgeoisie!,” “Do not vote, combat and resist!”, and “Election boycott!”


Militants of the Communist Party of Turkey/Marxist Leninist (TKP/ML) hung a banner in France as part of the Campaign to Defend the Life of Chairman Gonzalo. The slogan reads “Defend the life of Chairman Gonzalo!”


In Vienna, a rally was held in support of the international Campaign to Defend the Life and Health of Chairman Gonzalo. In a speech given at the rally, it was stated “Defending Chairman Gonzalo means defending the Peruvian Revolution which means defending the struggles of millions around the world. It is a matter of defending the teachings of this fighter for the whole world.”


In Tampere, posters and graffiti were documented commemorating the 103rd anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Finland, with revolutionaries distributing leaflets on the importance of reconstituting the party. The posters read, “For the reconstruction of the Communist Party of Finland! Unite under Maoism, death to revisionism!” and “Defend the life of Chairman Gonzalo!”


In Copenhagen, graffiti was documented at a train station reading, “Defend the life of Chairman Gonzalo!” alongside a hammer and sickle.


In Galway, Socialist Republicans held a series of actions as part of their campaign against US Imperialism in Ireland—distributing hundreds of leaflets and raising a banner above a busy highway reading, “US Imperialists Out of Ireland!”

United States

Over the weekend, anti-imperialist organization Serve the People – Los Angeles (STP-LA) and the Oxnard Tribune Support Committee hosted separate screenings of “You Must Tell the World,” a 1993 documentary film which covers the early years of the Campaign to Defend the Life of Chairman Gonzalo, following his arrest and trial.

Anti-imperialist organization Oxnard Revolutionary Study Group held an event Sunday where attendees studied the Tribune editorial “Move Heaven and Earth to Defend the Life of Chairman Gonzalo.” A speech was given on the international campaign and attendees made a banner reading “Move heaven and earth to defend Chairman Gonzalo!”

The Wheeling Tribune Support Committee tabled at Wheeling Pride-Festival. Various Tribune articles including the editorial “Move Heaven and Earth to Defend the Life of Chairman Gonzalo” were distributed to attendees.

Graffiti in support of the international Campaign to Defend the Life of Chairman Gonzalo were documented in Austin, Los Angeles, and Oxnard, California, with the slogans: “Defend the Life of Chairman Gonzalo!”, “Move Heaven and Earth to Defend the Life of Chairman Gonzalo!”, “Long Live Chairman Gonzalo!”, and “Long Live Chairman Gonzalo and His All Powerful Thought!”

Graffiti was also documented in Austin in support of the League of Poor Peasants, the revolutionary organization leading the struggle for agrarian revolution in the Brazilian countryside.

On Saturday, anti-imperialist organizations Serve the People – Los Angeles, People’s Struggle – San Fernando Valley, and People’s Power El Monte came together to host an event celebrating Black August, an annual commemoration and prison-based holiday meant to remember Black revolutionaries and political prisoners.

Organizers screened speeches by Malcolm X, Fred Hampton, and George Jackson, among others. A presentation was given on the speeches, emphasizing proletarian internationalism, the necessity of revolutionary violence as a means to overthrow imperialism, as well as the difference between reformism and revolution.
