Brazil: Revolutionaries Commemorate the International Day of Action for Chairman Gonzalo

By Ben Robinson

Across Brazil in the past week, democratic and people’s organizations have answered the international calls to honor Chairman Gonzalo (Abimael Guzman Reynoso) with actions all over the country. Chairman Gonzalo, the greatest Communist of the modern era, was assassinated by the old Peruvian State earlier this month, after 29 years of solitary confinement, in an attempt to deal a definitive blow to the revolution in Peru as well as Maoism generally, a weapon of the World Proletarian Revolution.

The Communist Party of Peru (PCP, Partido Communista del Peru) and the Communist Party of Brazil (Red Fraction) made a call to hold an international day of action on September 24 in honor of Chairman Gonzalo. The date marks the 29th anniversary of the Transcendental Speech by Chairman Gonzalo, when the Peruvian State presented him to the media in a cage after his capture and he responded by giving an impassioned speech to the cameras supporting the People’s War, not admitting defeat.

In Minas, Bahia, and Pernambuco, poor peasants and the the League of Poor Peasants (LCP, Liga dos Camponeses Pobres), a revolutionary organization leading the struggle for land in the countryside, held actions for Chairman Gonzalo. In Minas and Bahia, residents helped prepare the event, inspiring others to follow Chairman Gonzalo’s example.

The Popular Women’s Movement (MFP, Movimiento Femenino Popular), a revolutionary women’s organization, performed the song “Fighters of the Revolution” and sang, “Chairman Gonzalo is the guide, with whom the people of the world will triumph. We go down a luminous path. We will fight without truce until the end.” The event featured portraits of Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, Mao Zedong, and Gonzalo, and began with the singing of the Internationale.

Speakers read the recent statement by the Peru People’s Movement and declared that Chairman Gonzalo lives on through his thought, which continues to guide the Peruvian revolution, as well as his contributions to Marxism that are applicable across the world. Another speaker reminded attendees that we live in revolutionary times in which imperialism will be swept away, the People’s War in Peru continues, and the PCP wages struggle to reorganize their Party through the People’s War.

The LCP also organized peasants in Pernambuco and nearby areas to honor Chairman Gonzalo. After attending a large meeting where Chairman Gonzalo’s speech was read and attendees expressed their inspiration from Chairman Gonzalo’s commitment to revolution, the peasants organized themselves and took to the streets. The marchers carried red flags and a banner reading, “Chairman Gonzalo lives!” and “Long live Chairman Gonzalo’s all-powerful thought!” Fireworks were set off during the march and attendees sang songs. Vehicles were forced to stop—the the people remarked, “The landless are agitating.”

In Sertão, MFP members and the A Nova Democracia Support Committee held a commemoration for Chairman Gonzalo in a working-class neighborhood. The event started with the Internationale—many of the attendees had never heard of the Internationale before this. A member of MFP gave a speech where she called for women to fight shoulder to shoulder in the conquest of political power. One attendee chimed in to say that events like these are important to learn the history of those who fought for the people. All those who attended felt inspired to continue fighting for revolution.

Another revolutionary group, the Revolutionary Front for Defense of the Rights of the People (FRDDP, Frente Revolucionária de Defesa dos Direitos do Povo) released a video giving an overview of Chairman Gonzalo’s importance and showcasing different graffiti and actions commemorating him. FRDDP reaffirmed that Maoism, with Chairman Gonzalo’s contributions to Marxism that have universal validity, is the most powerful weapon of the international proletariat, and the video finished by calling on the Brazilian people to “build a new Brazil in service of the world revolution.”

As a part of the international call to celebrate Chairman Gonzalo’s life, the range of actions across Brazil demonstrate Chairman Gonzalo’s international importance and impact. Revolutionaries in Brazil and internationally will continue to defend Chairman Gonzalo’s contributions and leadership and honor him as the greatest Communist of the modern era.
